Wading elbow deep in the wetlands

Seed picking season is one of my favourite times of the year.  The sun is shining, you’re outside and as close to the natural world as you can be – elbow deep in a shrub, nose down in a grassland, gently harvesting seed into your bag or bucket.  My favourite collection day this year was with Tony Fitzgerald and the Biik team harvesting Water Ribbons.  Water ribbons are the best bush tucker.  I think they’re Uncle Shane’s favourite too.  The tubers are crisp and crunchy, the closest likely flavour is the water chestnu,t I think.  Even the green, swirly seeds are a nice salad garnish and oh so easy to pop in your mouth and snack on while you pick.  Wading into a billabong to harvest can be a bit intimidating.  First you push through the common reed – well above your head height and situated on the water’s edge in the boggy mud.  It rustles as you push through, eyes peeled for snakes.

We acknowledge and pay respects to Taungurung Ancestors and Elders, past present and emerging. We continue to remain strong in culture, traditions and memories of those who have paved the way for Taungurung People and Country. We move forward proudly and thank our Ancestors for their guidance and protection throughout our journey.

The National Walk for Truth is a powerful journey from Victorian Parliament House to Parliament House, led by Travis Lovett, calling for a national truth-telling process shaped in genuine partnership with First Nations People. As part of this significant journey, the walk will travel through Taungurung Country from 21–28 April, offering a meaningful opportunity for local communities to take part.
Participants are invited to join sections of the walk in and around Seymour and Nagambie, walking together in solidarity, reflection and respect. This stretch of the journey is a chance to honour the strength, resilience and living culture of First Nations People while contributing to a broader national movement for truth, healing and change, culminating during National Reconciliation Week.

Register for a section of the walk on their website: walkfortruth.com

Today is International Women’s Day!

We’re taking this moment to honour the strength, resilience and excellence of deadly women across Taungurung community. Our women carry culture, guide our young ones, protect Country and hold stories that keep us grounded. Their work, both seen and unseen, shapes our communities.

Today we also recognise the achievements of women around the world who stand strong, lift others up and create change in every space they walk into.

To all the deadly women in our community and beyond: we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you.

Happy International Women’s Day!

We are always so grateful for the opportunity to yarn and share Culture with our local government partners, out on Taungurung biik, where we can immerse people in our stories. Great to welcome Benalla Rural City Council Executive staff and RAP team.

After much rain, our wawa biik bus sloshed us through the mud, we had time for reflection and connection at our cultural sites, we tuned in to the diversity of wildlife around us and had positive chats led by our guides Matt and Ben.

As we`ve said before, this is not work, this is an honour!

Deadly group. Deadly day! Ngun Godjin (thank-you!). 💌
